Purpose Driven Career Guidance – Guiding Students In proving The World!

Presented by: James Gonyea, Director of Career Development Services, St. Petersburg College

About The Program

Human beings have from day one dedicated their lives to improving the world. It’s built into our DNA. As a result, our lives today are far better than those of our ancestors. However, life is still far from perfect. We still face struggles with crime, wars, floods and other natural disasters, insufficient and unsafe food production, affordable and clean energy, environmental pollution, corrupt governments – just to name a few. The impact on our world brought about by human activity has reached a critical level. What the world needs now is a strong commitment on the part of each individual to dedicate their careers in some way to solving problems. Whether they are small everyday improvements or large scale game changing accomplishments, each solution improves the world. Career guidance professionals are ideally suited to take the lead in this movement to not only help students select a career direction, but also to guide them in discovering how they each can use their career to solve problems that will improve the world.

This two session webinar will examine a three phase career guidance program designed to guide students in becoming the next generation of problem-solvers. Participants will learn how to guide students in:

  1. Selecting a career that best matches their interests, skills, values and personality style – a career where they are most likely to succeed.
  2. Defining, through the use of IBM’s THINK initiative, a purpose or mission within their chosen career field that will bring about improvements to our lives.
  3. Developing a job hunting strategy that will target and secure employment with employers where their mission can be accomplished.

Career guidance professionals who believe that they are agents of change and that it is imperative that we encourage students to become problem solvers, and who wish to learn how to enhance their career guidance program to achieve these goals, are encouraged to attend. A PowerPoint slide program, featuring the IBM THINK initiative will be presented and given to each participate for their own use. Each participant will also receive a free copy of the Gonyea Guide for Career Decision-Making and Planning with rights to photocopy for use with students and clients.
