"Every dog has his day!"

Puppypalooza is a one-day critter event designed to showcase the varied type of petplay and pet discipline. Check-in begins at 10 am, and events begin at 11 am. Cost of admission is $15 online or $20 at the door for Participants and Spectators alike. Entrants are encouraged to register by February 1st to guarentee a spot in all events. This event is Potluck. PUPPY PALOOZA 2019 IS A CHARITY EVENT FOR THE ASPCA.

On February 9th, LA's premier human Dog Show, Puppy Palooza, is back for its forth year! Check-in is at 10 am and events begin at 11 am. We celebrate our diversity and welcome all four-legged humans, including but not limited to, leather pups, rubber pups, foxes, kittens, and everything in between!

Our event is held at a private, outdoor location in Granada Hills that has previously hosted EQUUS, playdates, and Derby Day. Please contact any of us for details or rideshare information.

Please note that although this event is mainly designed for puppy, any pet or critter is allowed to participate. Foxes, kittens, and other four-legged critters are welcome and encouraged to participate in any event; there is an award category for this purpose (see below). And we need a SHEEP to herd!

EVENTS

The Presentation Event

Puppies or critters should have a healthy, well-groomed appearance, including clean ears, healthy gums and teeth, and neat paws. Collars/harnesses should be correctly fitted and in good repair; metalware should be polished. The trainer or handler is expected to also have a tidy presentation, with clean, well-groomed appearance. Puppies are judged based on character, health, and grooming, not gear; they should have a gait, bark, and attitude befitting of their breed. The handler should be confident, commanding, and in control of the pup.

TOTAL POINTS = 20

The Puppy/Critter Freestyle Event (Obedience)

Marks shall be given as follows:

There shall be Five (5) Marks on floor of competition arena that must be stopped at during the performance, with 30 points being awarded out each mark. At these marks, the puppy/critter and handler must perform a unique tasks out of the following list:

  • roll over
  • sit up and beg
  • stay
  • heel
  • fetch object
  • play dead
  • catch object (in mouth)
  • walk on hind legs like a puppy/critter

Artistic Marks

  • Energy, style, and representation of breed
  • Handler Position and effectiveness
  • Pattern and Content of Program; suitability of music

In the event of a tie, the competitor with the higher artistic marks shall take the higher placing.

TOTAL POINTS = 50

Scent Trials

Scent trials involve the pup's accuracy in seeking out parcels, toys, or pelts as directed by the handler based on scent. There are 4 (Four) parcels of similar size and shape placed inside 4 identical bags so that they cannot be seen. Each parcel is distinct from the others, and each has been prepped with a unique smell. The pup is either directed via command or scent to find a particular package and must find it based on scent. Upon identification, the pup may point or may howl, bay, or otherwise indicate identification of the package. would be having pups sniff a scent and then having to locate a parcel (out of 4 or 5) with said scent. Points are given for accuracy, style, sureness, and reaction to owner commands. Points will not be deducted for taking extra time or re-checking packages.

Artistic Marks

  • Energy, style, awareness of owners commands
  • Representation of breed, particularly with regards to indication (barking, pointing, et cetera)

In the event of a tie, the competitor with the higher artistic marks shall take the higher placing.

TOTAL POINTS = 30

Agility Obstacle Course

This is a timed event plus grading for faults. Pups will run the agility course on all fours according to instructions. The pup with the lowest time with fewest faults wins. Obstacles include:

  • Weave Poles
  • Hoop Jump
  • Hurdle Jump
  • Roll-Over
  • Tunnel
  • Teeter-Totter
  • Pause Box

Marks are awards as follows:

  • +15 second penalty for skipping an obstacle (each instance)
  • +5 second penalty for leaving or jumping off an obstacle prematurely or incorrectly handing the obstacle (for example, jumping off the teeter-totter, missing a weave pole, or leaving the pause box early before commanded)

Herding

This is a timed event. In the herding corral, there are 4 differently coloured lanes with a round about in the middle. The handler draws two cards which direct what lane the participant enters, goes around the round about and exits while herding the SHEEP. Pups are held by their owners until signaled, at which time they are released and must get the SHEEP into the correct shoot line and out the correct shoot line in as little time as possible. Dogs are expected to move swiftly and surely without injuring or overly frightening the SHEEP. Dogs may bark, block with their bodies, and nip without biting to move the SHEEP. Handlers may not interfere, except to SIGNAL WHICH ENTRY LANE the pups enters and to SIGNAL WHICH EXIT LANE after the pup herds the SHEEP around the round about once. Timer is stopped when SHEEP and Pup cross out of the Exit Shoot.

Dog Award

BEST IN SHOW AWARD (PUP)

The Best of Show Award is given to the Puppy with the highest accumulation of Ribbon Points. Points will be awarded as follows: 3 points for a First Place, 2 points for a Second Place, 1 point for a Third Place.

BEST IN SHOW AWARD (NON-PUP)

The Best of Show Award is given to any critter who is not a puppy (kitten, fox, et cetera) with the highest accumulation of Ribbon Points. Points will be awarded as follows: 3 points for a First Place, 2 points for a Second Place, 1 point for a Third Place.

BEST IN SHOW AWARD (HANDLER)

The Best of Show Award is given to the handler or trainer with the highest accumulation of Ribbon Points. Points will be awarded as follows: 3 points for a First Place, 2 points for a Second Place, 1 point for a Third Place.

HIGH POINT AWARD

The HIGH POINT AWARD is given to the Pony/Critter/Puppy with the highest accumulation of actual judges points. You do not have to enter all events to qualify for this award. This award takes into consideration the presentation, freestyle, and scent trial events only. There is a High Point Award for both critter and handler.

AUDIENCE CHOICE AWARD

The Audience Choice award is to be voted on by spectators, To qualify, pups and/or other critters may NOT already have won Best in Show and High Point. Any critter who has participated in any event qualifies.
