PULP: The Paper Medium

ArtPoint and the Museum of Craft and Design invite you to use your imagination.

Isabelle de Borchgrave

ArtPoint and the Museum of Craft and Design have partnered to bring you Pulp: The Paper Medium, a night of hands-on Arts projects designed to ignite your playful and creative side! Inspired by Pulp Fashion: The Art of Isabelle de Borchgrave-on view through June 12, 2011 at the Legion of Honor-the event will be focused on the use of paper as an artistic medium in itself.

Taking place at Don Soker Contemporary Art on Thursday, May 19 from 6-9 pm, the evening will include a discussion panel and art-making activities.  Of course, what good would a discussion be without generous libations to get people talking?  Fruit, cheese and dessert will also be provided.

Our presenters include Julia Goodman, Claire Jackel, and the San Francisco Center for the Book.  Following the discussion, you'll be free to make use of our paper-crafting area, where clever and innovative projects will incite you to roll up your sleeves and join in. In the spirit of de Borchgrave, we encourage you to push the boundaries of what you thought possible with just paper.

Julia Goodman is a San Francisco-based paper sculpture artist. Julia earned her BA in International Relations and Peace & Justice Studies at Tufts University in 2001. She began making paper in her backyard in 2003 and completed her Master's in Fine Arts at the California College of the Arts in 2009. Since graduating she has spent time at the JB Blunk Residency in Inverness, California and completed a studio internship at Dieu Donne papermaking studio in New York.

Claire Jackel is a San Francisco-based artist working in painting and sculpture. In 2009 she received her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. She was a 2008 recipient of the Murphy and Cadogan Fellowship in the Fine Arts and in 2010 was nominated for the SECA Art Award. Her work has been exhibited in Denver, Los Angeles, and throughout the Bay Area.

The San Francisco Center for the Book is the premier book arts center on the west coast. It is a place to learn about the many arts and crafts of the book. Through workshops, exhibitions, and public events, SFCB promotes both knowledge of traditional book arts and experimental book forms.
