Craftsmanship, unity, culture. These are the three strongest frequencies that resonate through every role V.I.V.E.K plays in UK bass music and contemporary dub culture: Artist, label owner, deep-drawing world-touring selector and the man behind one of London’s most important dances, SYSTEM.

It’s in his roots: Southall born-and-bred, V.I.V.E.K has been immersed in soundsystem culture since his earliest musical footsteps. A student of eminent systems such as Aba Shanti and Jah Shaka, total respect to the culture’s rich heritage is evident in all his operations from his vast dot-joining line-ups that span from dub to jungle to the way he values and celebrates music on his highly collectable vinyl-only imprint System Music via his evergreen remix of renowned singer Johnny Osbourne on blueprint imprint Greensleeves for more.

Arresting full attention and imagination both as a DJ and producer since he emerged in the late 2000s, V.I.V.E.K’s music has been pressed and blessed on key imprints such as his own Sys-tem Music, Deep Medi and Tectonic. His creations are a crucial brew comprising everything from heavyweight bass hypnosis to flighty, steppy garage hybrids via sweet dub soul and all-out low-end pressure. His self-built custom soundsystem SYSTEM, meanwhile, is a unique force of nature in UK bass music culture; the most prominent modern system to be established this dec-ade, it’s a whole new chapter in the UK’s longstanding and illustrious history of barrier-breaking soundystem communities. As such, it attracts committed fans from around the globe and selectors from across system spectrum.

His label System Music has the same treasured, trusted status; not only as a source of legit never-to-be-repressed artefacts that prize the real value of music, but also as a key platform for encouraging forward-thinking, powerful system music from across the OG – freshmen continuum. Karma to Kromestar, Sleeper to SP:MC, LAS to Egoless: System Music’s celebration of bass music’s sonic scope and nurturing of talent and craft ensures its consistent buy-on-sight ranking.

Most importantly it’s as a selector that V.I.V.E.K’s position is the most vital. The selective tailor of rich, immersive and eclectic sessions, few DJs dig as deep, join the dots or draw for dubs quite like this east London operator. Accentuating his influence as a producer, engineer, dubsmith, label curator and system builder; his creative excursions as a DJ, both on the dancefloor and the airwaves broadcaster on the likes of Rinse FM and Radar Radio, galvanise his status as one of the most respected, influential and singular artists who is driven by nothing but craftsmanship, unity and the sense of culture UK bass music and contemporary dub culture needs to thrive and inspire.

BUKKHA

Originally hailing from Lafayette, Louisiana, Bukkha is truly a force who’s been laser-focused on making music ever since he could remember. After quickly mastering the guitar early on, he eventually became a dub producer in 2007 influenced by everyone from Scientist to Luke Vibert, Madlib and Billie Holiday. In his first year of producing, the young musician earned a stripe by getting his inaugural 12” release, “Under”, signed to the acclaimed Dubbed Out label and blessed by a Radikal Guru remix on the flip. Bukkha then got the opportunity to remix respected producers like Roommate, Radikal Guru, Tuff & Powa, Danny Scrilla and Jojo Mac, proudly re-presenting the Gulf Coast dub / bass scene until 2015, when he moved to Spain. Continuing with an ever-growing list of consistent releases on Moonshine, Dubs Alive, Airtight and King Dubbist, the American producer is gearing up for another bright year in dub. With releases this year on Moonshine and DubStuy—including collaborations with Madplate Sound, Junior Dread, DTR and Blind Prophet—Bukkha is ready to take his interpretation of dub across the globe.

BLIND PROPHET

Blind Prophet is native Long Islander Joe Burns. He first appeared on the bass music scene in May 2010 with a string of digital releases on labels like L2S Recordings, Car Crash Set, and DubKraft Records. In March of 2016, Joe secured his first vinyl release on Portland’s ZamZam Sounds label, establishing himself as an up-and-coming producer in the world of dub. The year 2017 saw a pile of Blind Prophet wax, including the anthemic “Rastaman Chat” and “Marijuana Burns Capitalism” singles on Dub Stuy, and a collab with Bukkha on his “Unity” EP on Moon-shine Recordings. Along with his steady dosage of releases and rising popularity Joe has per-formed in the US, Canada and Europe, playing alongside people like Zion Train, Solomon Herit-age, Joe Nice, Truth, J. Robinson and Compa.

In addition to his solo efforts, Burns is one half of Folding City with Ben Ulis (Self Evident). Alt-hough the two friends worked together before forming the project, they created Folding City in 2015 after realizing that the material warranted a new project moniker. Individually, Burns and Ulis’s solo productions are quite different from one another – Ben showcases his intense, dancefloor-oriented take on grime, dancehall and footwork while Joe is known for his reflective and melodic dub, garage, and productions kicking at 130 BPM. When they put it all together, they meld all of their influences into something truly unique.

ALTER ECHO & E3

Portland’s Alter Echo & E3 have deep roots in dub, and have been in demand in the world of underground sound system music since their first 7”, “Kufic Dub”, dropped on ZamZam Sounds in early 2013. Their second, “Nubian Dub”/“Warning Dub” caused a ruckus worldwide, championed by selectors from Pinch to The Bug—and received a glowing 9 out of 10 in Mixmag. The single spawned remixes from heavyweights Ishan Sound, Egoless and DJ Madd, cementing AEE3’s rep as producers with a unique vision of dubwise, from the abstract to the floor-filling. Subsequent vinyl on ZamZam, LavaLava, Moonshine, Gourmet Beats, Lion Charge, and now Scotch Bonnet / Scrub A Dub have cemented their rep.

Their productions are known for devastating styles at a variety of tempos, always with a signa-ture sound characterized by thick, heavy atmospheres, masterful dubbing, vinyl archaeology and loads of sonic detail and intrigue. They have performed at Bass Coast, Oregon Eclipse Festival, DAT Fest, and have shared the stage with artists as varied as Kahn & Neek and Lee Scratch Perry. E3 has recently repped ZamZam Sounds at Outlook Festival, the legendary Trinity Center in Bristol, the New Forms Festival, and twice at Leeds institution SubDub.

Alter Echo has collaborated with the likes of DJ Spooky, Lee Perry, Mad Professor, Scientist, Twilight Circus, Dr. Israel, and Systemwide, often working as the Hidden Hand, perfecting and alloying disparate materials into new dub forms. Alongside E3, he was one of the founders of world-renowned future-dub label BSI Records, and has released on labels including BSI, M Records, Six Degrees, Thirsty Ear, Sub Rosa, and Bangarang.

E3 (Ezra E. Ereckson) is a selector, producer, visual artist and co-boss of dub vinyl labels Zam-Zam Sounds and Khaliphonic. A founding member of the pioneering agit-dub band Systemwide and the president of now-retired BSI Records, E3 has been collecting records since the age of 13 and holding down DJ residencies since 2000. On the solo tip, E3 has tracks and releases on Hotline, Bella Union, Boomarm Nation, 45Seven, and Gourmet Beats.
