Description

Speaker: Professor Anthony Y.H. Fung

Chinese University of Hong Kong

The presentation charts the cultural formation of youth culture in China with a particular focus on the complexity of digital culture. Against the commonplace idea about cultural globalization—that brings upon China a more open, liberal youth culture--I argue that formation of youth culture in China is largely adhered to the system, not outside or opposite to it, while small communities of Chinese youth are able to create alternative spaces and discourses on some digital sites through secondary production to maintain their autonomy.

Anthony Y.H. Fung is Director and Professor in the School of Journalism and Communication at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is also a Professor in the School of Art and Communication under The Recruitment Program of Global Experts at Beijing Normal University at Beijing and Pearl River Chair Professor at Jinan University at Guangzhou, China. His research interests and teaching focus on popular culture and cultural studies, popular music, gender and youth identity, cultural industries and policy, and new media studies. He published widely in international journals, and authored and edited more than ten Chinese and English books. His recent books are Chinese Youth Culture (2016 under Polity Press) (co-authored with de Kloet) and Global Game Industries and Cultural Policy (2017 under Palgrave Macmillan).
