Welcome to a new training approach from Adrian Collaborative, LLC. In addition to our professional services in planning, project management, and community involvement, we have a corporate focus on research and education. The primary discussions, examples, and case studies will be based in Georgia and the Southeast. Not your typical training class, our approach combines informal lecture with many media examples, interactive group discussion, and hands-on group case studies with presentations. Our registration fee includes everything you need: a great training atmosphere, creative food choices, engaging discussions with colleagues, and extensive take-away materials that are formatted for practical use.
Topic: Public Involvement for Transportation Projects
Public involvement can have many meanings in our society today. For transportation plans and projects, the discipline requires a balance between public relations, objective findings, and understanding the affected community. Depending on the project and phase, regulations for public input in certain formats also have to be met. This 2-day course will cover the topic of public involvement from its requirements under NEPA to new approaches and tools.
§ Background legislation and policies regarding public involvement and NEPA/GEPA
§ Mandated steps, formats, and documentation to address NEPA and Georgia DOT requirements
§ Understanding each affected community in a project area to match outreach to the stakeholders
§ Identifying and addressing needs for accessibility: limited English proficiency, ADA, transportation, and other conditions
§ Preparing a public involvement plan to match the project scope, geographic/demographic characteristics, and budget
§ Effective meeting formats
§ Handling controversial topics in group or individual settings
§ Beyond meetings: approaches and guidelines for stakeholder awareness and consensus
§ Sharing lessons learned and examples of various meeting types and public involvement outcomes
In addition to covering main elements of each topic, we will divide into teams to undertake a case study. A fast-paced, interactive approach will keep you engaged through the 2-day course. Social media use is highly encouraged as long as it does not distract the class, and several exercises will use online access. Tweet any questions or project examples you have (@adrianplans #adrianPI), and we will try to cover all relevant topics and hold a twitter session of lessons learned at end of the day.
Certifications/Credit: GDOT Approved Environmental Training, 12 Professional Development Hours
Certification Maintenance (CM) credits may be available for this 2-day training session upon request from certified planners who have registered for the course. Please email us with your request and AICP certificaiton number. Adrian Collaborative is an approved CM Provider. More information about AICP’s CM program can be found at www.planning.org/cm.

Early Registration Cost: Private: $550 State/Federal Agency: $300 Including training materials, breakfast, lunch, snacks and beverages
Early Registration ends March 22; fee subject to 10% increase after that date.
Registration: Online payment options as well as checks. Seating limited to 20. A waiting list will be available when registration reaches 90%. We will contact alternates if seats become available or schedule a new session and allow the waiting list to have priority registration.

Who: Lead instructor will be Todd A. Barker, AICP. Todd has worked in the consulting industry for more than 24 years, with mostly focused on environmental and transportation planning. He has contributed to or led projects in 9 states, with an emphasis over the past 15 years in Georgia and the Southeast. In addition to conducting training for two state agencies, Todd has served as speaker and moderator at state and national conferences on planning topics.

Adrian Collaborative, LLC is a professional planning firm based in metro Atlanta. Our specialties include NEPA management, review, and advisory; environmental project scheduling; program management; environmental and transportation planning; community engagement; and new media in project communications and outreach. We are prequalified by Georgia DOT in NEPA and Public Involvement and as a female-owned DBE firm.
