Public discussion on the extends and limits of the adoption and implementation of Women, Peace and Security agenda in the region.

About this Event

The regional organisation ASEAN has adopted the Joint Statement on Promoting the Women, Peace and Security Agenda in the region in 2017 and created a Women and Peace Registry in 2018. However, ASEAN still has homework to mainstream the global WPS agenda among its members. Until now, only the Philippines and Indonesia who have succeeded in adopting their respective National Action Plans (NAPs) on Women, Peace and Security. Discussion needs to be done to question the progress and obstacles faced by ASEAN and its members in furthering the agenda regionally and at the national level. It should also be considered how best practices could be shared from countries that already implement National Action Plans, as well as what are potential specific areas of cooperation that can be pursued within this topic.

The proposed public discussion aims to gather insights and experiences from thought leaders working in the issue concerning of Women, Peace and Security (WPS). The discussion will approach the issue of WPS from various lenses, including grass roots peace initiatives, regional human rights situation, business groups’ involvement in furthering WPS agenda, as well as sharing the experience from outside the region. The discussion is inviting expert from Canada to share lessons learned from the country process in implementing WPS agenda and formulating its second NAP.

The speakers are as follows:

  • H.E. Ambassador Diedrah Kelly - Ambassador of Canada to ASEAN
  • Ms. Dwi Rubiyanti Kholifah - Country Director of Asian Muslim Action Network (AMAN)
  • Ms. Rachel Arinii Judhistari - ASEAN Advocacy Programme Manager of Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development (Forum - Asia)

The discussion would be moderated by Dr. Fitriani, researcher at the Department of International Relations, Centre for Strategic and International Studies.

About Women, Peace, and Security Forum

The Forum functions for gathering communities’ aspirations, as well as monitoring ASEAN latest developments and challenges, in pursuing Women, Peace and Security agenda. The Forum is an initiative of the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) Jakarta to mainstream the agenda of Women, Peace and Security in ASEAN by increasing engagement through public discussion and raising awareness by issuing publications to support women’s equal, full and effective participation in the creation and maintenance of peace.
