Description

For the last in our winter season of poetry translation workshops, we will be inviting Dr Alan Cummings from SOAS's Department of East Asian Languages and Culture to give the workshop on translating Japanese poet Karan Kurose. Alan is the author of Haiku: Love, published by The British Museum Press, and has a wealth of experience of translating pre-modern poetry. For this workshop he will be providing bridge translations of contemporary Japanese poets. Award-winning poet Clare Pollard will be facilitating.

There is no need to know the language being translated, just come along!

Karan Kurose was born in Osaka in 1977. Chief priest of Gannenji Buddhist temple, in Toyama. Studied with the modern tanka poet Ken Kasugai (1938-2004). Has published three volumes of poetry. Works as a poetry judge for the NHK tanka TV programme, and for the Mirai tanka society.

Dr. Alan Cummings is Senior Teaching Fellow at SOAS, University of London. His research interests include kabuki dramaturgy and post-war performance. Recent publications include Haiku: Love (British Museum Press, 2013), and "Money is all that matters in the world" in Jones & Watanabe (eds.), A Tokyo Anthology: Literature from Japan's Modern Metropolis 1850-1920(University of Hawai'i Press, 2017).

Clare Pollard is an award-winning UK poet, She has published four collections with Bloodaxe Books, latest is Incarnation. She has extensive experience as a translator, co-translating Asha Lul Mohamud Yusuf for the PTC. Starting in 2018 Clare will be the Editor of Modern Poetry in Translation magazine.
