Psychotropic Medications: A Review for Therapists
Event Information
About this Event
Sean Murphy, PhD, MSN, PMHNPBC is a board certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner who trained at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He currently treats adult patients in his private psychiatric practice and emerging adult patients at Ithaca College.
While engaging in therapy, many clients ask their therapists about referrals to psychiatry, seek specialist psychiatric care on their own, and/or see their Primary Care Providers for medical approaches to treatment of psychiatric disorders. This presentation will enhance therapists' general knowledge of psychotropic medications.
This training is targeted to counselors, therapists, (LMHC, LCSW, LMFT, LCAT), and other non-prescribing clinicians who want to enhance their general understanding of psychotropic medications.
Learning Objectives:
- Review the major classes of psychotropic medications (antidepressants, mood stabilizers, antipsychotics, stimulants, hypnotics, anxiolytics);
- Understand the mechanism of therapeutic action of medications in the major classes;
- Dispel the idea that medications "correct a chemical imbalance";
- Discuss newer medications for psychiatric disorders and future directions of medical treatment of psychiatric illnesses;
- Consider when to refer clients for psychiatric evaluation and ways to frame therapist-initiated referrals for medical consultation.
This class will be conducted virtually. All registered participants will receive login and class information a few days prior to event.
