About this event

Program Description

In this inaugural session of the Psychoanalytic Essentials reading group, licensed mental health professionals will come together virtually to learn how psychoanalytic principles can enhance their work. They also can earn 3 continuing education credits while doing so!

In advance of the live seminar, participants will read the paper*, “Lessons from MacGyver: Working psychoanalytically under less than optimal conditions” (Kunst, 2002) in which Dr. Kunst describes a simple, practical model for understanding the psychical world and the importance of the unconscious. In this “search-and-rescue operation”, the therapist helps the patient make fresh contact with split-off parts of his or her personality. The main tool used is psychoanalytic understanding, enhanced by analytic listening and interpretation of the transference.

Participants will complete a quiz verifying that they have read the paper in advance of the live session. During the live session, Dr. Kunst will provide an overview of the key ideas from the paper and then lead a discussion among participants.

*The paper will be emailed to participants upon registration. Registration will close 24 hours in advance of the meeting to allow time for registrants to read the paper before the live session.

Number continuing education credits
