Event description

Description

PSWC colleagues, do you ever wonder if God is enough for the pressures of life and ministry? In the middle of the night, do you fear that you are not enough for the challenges in your church and family?

Together we will remember - God is enough! You are enough. We are enough together as sisters and brothers in Christ.

God is offering us all enough space to breathe, rest, pray, play, and wonder. In the beautiful setting of Santa Barbara, join your colleagues for the Fall Pastors Retreat, October 22-24, 2018! The retreat begins with dinner on Monday evening and ends with breakfast on Wednesday morning.

Generously hosted by MONTECITO COVENANT CHURCH, we’ll rest, worship, share meals, and remind each other that God knows how to care for us and provide for us. We’ll remember that God has called each of us to serve in the Kingdom, exactly as we are.

We welcome Rev. Deborah Penny to our PSWC Fall Pastors Retreat! Deborah serves as the Associate Director of Field Education at North Park Theological Seminary, also her alma mater, class of 2006. Her role is to assist students in their pastoral, leadership and ministry formation by way of field placement and discernment of call. She is an adjunct professor, and is currently serving as Interim Director of the NPTS Spiritual Formation Program. Deborah also is a certified spiritual director, mentor and spiritual coach. Deborah and her husband, Irvin, attend Oakdale Covenant Church on the south side of Chicago. They are blessed with 7 children, 15 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren and their dog, Blue! Deborah tries to live her life according to her favorite Psalm - “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me bless his holy name.” (Psalm 103:1)

We welcome Rev. Sumit Sen as he offers theological reflections and stories from the journey of pastoral ministry! He writes: I was born and raised in India. I came to the US on December 31, 1991. I came to Sioux City, IA to attend college. Honestly, I would always regard Sioux City as my home town after Kolkata, India. I was a Hindu. I gave my life to Christ at a Covenant Church in Sioux City. I have served as a pastor in Iowa, Indiana and Wisconsin before coming to California. I have a heart for small towns and small churches. I am now serving as a pastor of Care and Outreach at University Covenant Church in Davis. I met my wife Jody at a Midwest Conference Annual meeting in Arvada, CO while she was serving as a youth intern in Lincoln, NE. Jody now serves as a Bereavement Coordinator at a Hospice Center. We also have two children, Jay and Niki.

On Tuesday morning of the retreat, we will worship together and then receive a Menu of Tastes of Spiritual Practices! Each option is designed to give us a “taste” of a spiritual practice or habit – a practice of prayerfulness, which may be something new or a reminder of something quite familiar in your faith journey.

Writing as a Spiritual Practice

"In the beginning was the Word, John wrote. And from the beginning the Word has put together the words of this story that we are all living each and every day. Our God is an author with an incredible body of work, and maybe you're one who likes to follow him in this practice. In this group we will take some time to explore God as author, and how we express his creativeness as we take to writing as well. From creative writing to creating sermons to academic endeavors, writing is, and can be, a spiritual practice." Facilitated by Casey Barton, Covenant Pastor.

Conversation About Prayer

You are invited to join colleagues in a candid and loving conversation about the practice of prayer in all it forms. We will explore the importance of a rhythm and habit of prayer integrated into the vast range of life experiences and emotions - joy, hope, delight, fear, boredom, disappointment and failure. If you struggle to honor a daily commitment to prayer and wish for encouragement, join this humble conversation. Facilitated by Sumit Sen, Covenant Pastor.

Word By Word

Engage with Scripture in a fresh and compelling way. Merging the two contemplative practices of Lectio Divina and spiritual journaling, Word by Word invites your written responses to God’s Word in a way that stirs your spirit and engages your heart. Facilitated by Susan Cosio, Covenant pastor, chaplain and spiritual director.

Cycling Along the Beach

Join this group as we ride bikes on the Cabrillo Blvd path along the beach. Enjoy practicing awareness of God’s presence as you ride. We’ll invite each other to pay attention to signs of God’s communication. We’ll spend the final 30 minutes sharing with one another any observations or experiences from this practice of “listening/watching/cycling” prayer! Facilitated by Doug Lee, Covenant Pastor.

Prayer Walk in Montecito

Join this prayer practice of a solitude walk in the Montecito and Westmont College neighborhood. We’ll encourage one another to pay attention to sights, sounds, and impressions of God’s presence as we walk. Enjoy this practice of paying attention. We’ll spend the final 30 minutes gathering together to share reflections. Facilitated by Flor Graterol and Laurie Cornell, Covenant Pastors.

Once again this year, Tuesday afternoon will be completely free for you to shape as you wish! Pray, nap, walk, wander along the beach, visit the Zoo, read, go rock-climbing, or enjoy coffee with your spouse or friend.
