Description
Portland State University and the Technology Association of Oregon will host the first CleanWeb Hack and will bring together college students, industry innovators, entrepreneurs, and civic leadership to illuminate the opportunities for creating new efficiencies in energy, buildings, waste and water. The event will bring together talent and technology resources to explore the intersection of information technology (web, social, mobile) and issues related to climate change and global resource constraints.
The PSU-TAO CleanWeb Hack is a part of a joint summit between PSU and TAO titled, Portland State of Mind: Powering the Region’s Tech Economy. PSU will host a summit for strategic partners in the region’s technology sector. This event will focus on industry needs and PSU’s role in supporting them --from R&D to workforce training to economic development. The CleanWeb Hack will be marketed to Portland’s technology community as the final day of this three-day tech summit, and the CleanWeb Hack will serve as an opportunity to put principle into practice by fostering innovation and collaboration among students, tech professionals, and academics.
TAO and PSU are bringing Stephen Fleming, the Head of Georgia Tech’s Enterprise Innovation Institute, to Portland to help lead these discussions. The goal by the end of the summit is to have a number of models that can be applied across Oregon’s university system to break down barriers between industry and academia. The CleanWeb Hack represents the first of what will likely be a regular series of collaborative efforts between the tech industry and academia in Oregon.
The CleanWeb Hack will bring together students and professors from different disciplines to solve environmental issues through utilization of information technology. This is also a "tech laboratory” where students will work alongside professionals to apply their knowledge. Participants will spend one day hacking in small teams to create radical new solutions across key Cleanweb sectors and will present their creations to a panel of judges on Saturday evening.
The U.S. Department of Energy's datasets that will be available to attendees include datasets pertaining to energy, solar, and utility rates.
