Event Details

Insights and takeaways from the 2017 Hawaii Legislative Session with a panel of insider experts.

Each January, 76 elected representatives throughout our state convene in the annual legislative session to tackle a myriad of issues. From developing our state's various budgets and outlining fiscal priorities for the state to handling matters associated with tax credits, business development, to education, there are always many different issues to tackle.

This year, many contentious issues were addressed by our legislators.

Join us as Senator Stanley Chang, Representative Takashi Ohno, and Senate Communications Director Jill Kuramoto share their insight as to what happened (and didn't) during the 2017 legislative session.

About Stanley Chang
Stanley Chang was born and raised in East Honolulu to hardworking immigrants from China and attended Wai-Kahala Preschool, Kahala Elementary School, and ‘Iolani School. After graduating from ‘Iolani school, Chang attended Harvard College, graduating magna cum laude and Harvard Law School cum laude. Before being elected to the City Council, Chang practiced law at Cades Schutte in Honolulu, specializing in real estate law.

About Takashi Ohno
Takashi Ohno is the State Representative for District 27, which includes Liliha, Puunui, Alewa Heights and Nuuanu. He was elected in 2012 and is currently serving his third term in office. Ohno is the Chair of the House Committee on Intrastate Commerce (IAC). Prior to being elected, he was a third-grade teacher at Mayor Joseph J. Fern Elementary School in Kalihi

About Jill Kuramoto
Jill is a veteran journalist, a long-time resident of Hawaii, and an active member in the community serving on several non-profit boards and committees. She is currently the Director of Communications for the Hawaii State Senate. During her two decades in broadcast journalism, Jill has won awards for her work as a reporter and anchor, which took her from reporting on the red carpet to covering natural disasters. She brings with her a broad background in media and community relations, as well as the utility industry and government relations.
