Theme

Birth record counselling and the opportunity to access information from adoption records can be of immense value to adopted people as it helps them to explore some of the issues and dilemmas they may encounter. It can enable adopted adults to have a greater understanding of who they are and where they come from. However it can also be a challenging task for adoption workers who may struggle with decisions about whose information is it. This one-day workshop will provide the opportunity for adoption practitioners to begin to explore the role and responsibilities that adoption practitioners and their agencies have in relation to providing these services. It will also briefly examine searching and intermediary services available to adopted adults.

Target Group

 Adoption practitioners and managers who require training in this area of work, or who wish to improve their practice.

Trainers

  Andy Sayers is a qualified and experienced social worker, trainer and consultant who has specialised in family placement work for over 20 years in the UK and overseas.

Julia Feast OBE is an independent consultant. She is an experienced social worker, trainer and researcher. She has particular interest in the identity and information rights and needs of adopted people, adult care leavers and donor conceived people.

Aims

  By the end of the day participants will have an understanding of :-

    ×        The legislative framework for birth records counselling and access to information;

×        The complexities of disclosure of information, and what can be disclosed;

×        Searching tools and intermediary services for adopted people.
