Event description

Description

A compact metropolis abundant with health care providers, New York City has relatively few legal restrictions preventing people from obtaining the abortion care they need. Close proximity to abortion providers in the city makes it theoretically easy to access care. For those who live in rural areas across the country--even in New York State--patients face extreme obstacles obtaining an abortion. Abortion clinics, already in short supply, have been systematically shut down throughout the US due to legal restrictions. About 97% of "non-metro" counties now lack an abortion provider, and one in five people have to drive 42 miles or more to get an abortion. Rural America and its abortion providers are on the frontlines of the war being waged against abortion.

Join Physicians for Reproductive Health, Trust Women, and NOW-NYC at the New York Society for Ethical Culture for a public forum on the provision of abortion in rural and underserved areas.

Panelists include:

  • Julie Burkhart, Founder and CEO of Trust Women, with clinics in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Washington State
  • Kelli Garcia, Director of Reproductive Justice Initiatives and Senior Counsel at the National Women's Law Center
  • Julia McDonald, DO, MPH, family medicine doctor in Maine

Our guest panel will be moderated by Dr. Anne Davis, Consulting Medical Director of Physicians for Reproductive Health. Topics discussed will include difficulties for patients, the challenges of recruiting providers, and the use of politics to manipulate and restrict the provision of reproductive health care in underserved areas. Our speakers' expertise will also provide an inside look at the opportunities available for advocates of comprehensive reproductive health and what we can all do to support the work of rural clinics.
