Event Details

It is a pleasure to invite you to the 2014-2015 Young Achievers Program Orientation. Embarking on the journey of becoming a Young Achiever means making a choice to commit to growth, development and success! We hope that you will consider being a part of our exciting, diverse, and vibrant community of scholars, artist, and athletes located in the heart of New York City--Harlem.

The Young Achievers: Go to High School, Go to College is a young men’s mentoring and leadership academy collaboratively run by the Metro-Manhattan Chapter of The Links Incorporated, and the Alpha Lambda Gamma Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. Established in 1998, The Young Achievers was created to address the needs and help attack the issues challenging high school aged African-American and Hispanic males in the Harlem community.  By arming these young men with effective life skills through a myriad of workshops, The Young Achievers Program aims to combat the media’s negative portrayal of young African-American and Hispanic males as well as help them make positive transitions from high school to college and beyond.

In the 16 years since this program’s inception, we have had over 240 participants. Of those participants, 90% have gone on to college and 70% have graduated. Colleges and Universities attended by Young Achiever’s include but are not limited to: Yale, Cornell, Xavier, Morehouse, Georgetown, Penn State,  Hampton, Morgan State, Tuskegee, SUNY, CUNY, FAMU, and Fordham. Additionally, The Young Achievers Program has facilitated international travel to Africa and community service residencies at the Senegalese American Bilingual School for some of the young men in the program. Outings to the United Nations, college tours, and various community service projects are just some of the examples of preparatory  activities The Young Achievers Program is committed to in hopes of cultivating young men of distinction and achievement.

Furthermore, The Young Achievers Program also hosts meetings and developmental activities/workshops such as: college planning, leadership skills, financial literacy, career exploration, cultural activities and reflections,, basketball games, various workplace tours, social/dining etiquette, oratorical contests, and job planning/interviewing. In 2014-2015 we are extremely pleased to be expanding our repertoire of annual workshops to include: Big Apple College Fair, Anti Violence Seminar-How To Conduct Yourself With Police, Thanksgiving Feed the Homeless, Black and Gold Olympics, and Project Alpha-STD’s and Teen Pregnancy.

We hope that you will join us this year and continue the successful tradition that has been established in this program. The orientation will be held at Harlem Hospital Center(506 Malcolm X Blvd, New York, NY 10037) on Thursday, October 9th, 2014 at 6:30pm.
