On November 3, 2020, Rhode Island voters will consider an amendment to the state constitution to remove “Providence Plantations” from the state name. Where did this phrase come from, which histories does it refer to, and what does it mean now for communities across Rhode Island? Join the Center for Reconciliation and guest speakers to learn about why “Providence Plantations” is in Rhode Island’s state name; the history of plantations in Rhode Island where enslaved people lived and worked; and the meanings the state name now holds for different communities.

Speakers include Silvermoon LaRose, Assistant Director, Tomaquag Museum; Sal Monteiro, Jr., Senior Nonviolence Facilitator, Nonviolence Institute; historian Joanne Pope Melish, author of Disowning Slavery: Gradual Emancipation and “Race” in New England, 1780-1860; and Ray Rickman, Executive Director, Stages of Freedom and former Rhode Island Deputy Secretary of State.
