About this Event

Join Protochips, EDAX, and the Electron Microscopy Laboratory at Colorado School of Mines for a powerful workshop that features the latest and greatest detectors and systems from EDAX and Protochips. Featuring presentations and product demonstrations on coupling advanced EBSD and EDS detectors with in situ heating and environmental control in the SEM and TEM, this event will overview the numerous scientific disciplines turning to correlative EM techniques to discover new dynamic sample behavior in realistic environments.

9:00 - 9:30 Registration and Welcome

  9:30 - 10:30 Overview of EBSD and EDS

Matt Nowell, EDAX

Learn how Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) can provide quantitative information about crystallographic microstructure and how Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) can provide elemental composition information in the SEM. Recent advances have improved EBSD collection speeds up to 4,500 indexed points per second, which is ideal for dynamic in-situ experiments. This presentation will review the applications of EBSD for in-situ analysis, as well as introducing new functionality that can be applied to these experiments.

11:00 - 12:30 Demonstration of In Situ Heating + EBSD

See how the Fusion Select system delivers accurate, uniform sample heating up to 1200ºC to thin samples in the SEM. Learn how EBSD techniques enhance characterization of crystalline samples, accelerating research discovery.

1:30 - 2:30 Introduction to Environmental In Situ TEM

Jordan Moering, Protochips 

Learn how imaging dynamic events in hot, gaseous environments or in hydrated, wet environments is changing the way research is conducted inside the TEM/ STEM. This presentation will feature an overview of both the Atmosphere Gas Cell and Poseidon Select Liquid Cell, featuring recent results and applications in the fields of catalysis, electrochemistry, corrosion, and synthesis.

3:00 - 4:30 Demonstration of Liquid Cell Electrochemistry

Kate Marusak, Protochips 

Experience all steps of Poseidon Select operation including holder assembly, leak check operation, and imaging conditions. Witness real samples undergoing nucleation and growth within the electron microscope in a dynamic nanoscale experiment.

4:30 - 5:00 Wrap Up and Conclusions

The Protochips and EDAX teams will be available for questions and to discuss your specific research project or experimental interests.
