Take Action On H4549

Thank you to those who joined us at the press conference in Columbia on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at the State House.  What a great way to kick off  our campaign to stop Legislative Assaults on Our Voting Rights.  We need thousands of voters to contact their representatives and urge them to oppose H4549.  Help us expand our outreach by contacting your friends and asking them to take the simple steps below and register their action on this page.

Every House Member needs to receive a minimum of 200 calls.  However, voters in Horry County and Greenville County should make an extra effort to express concern to House Members Alan Clemmons and Dwight Loftis, sponsors of this terrible bill.  Judiciay Committee chairman James H. Harrison of Richland County (District 75) deserves an equal level of attention from voters in his district.

Please contact your House Member today!

What Should You Do Now?

1.       Call your Representative in the House and ask that he or she advocate and vote against House Bill 4549 to make sure it does not pass.  Don’t take for granted he may do the “right thing”.  Ask your representative to oppose the bill in all forms.

2.       If you don’t know how to contact your House representative, call this number 803-734-3070 or visit  to find out now.

3.       Call three friends and ask them to do the same.

4.       Register here to let us know that you contacted your representative and urged three friends to do likewise.  Choose the "I Took Action" ticket.  You can come back to the site and update your record.

What You Should Know.

1.       House Bill 4549 is yet another effort to block access to the polls. The measure is aimed squarely at voter registration in South Carolina.

2.       Backers of the bill have fast tracked this legislation and it will be up for approval this week.  Debate is expected to resume on Thursday, February 9th.  That’s why you must join us in taking action now!

3.       Every organization that works to register voters will be required to provide names, addresses, a sworn statement, and submit all new voter applications within 48 hours, or be subject to significant fines. This law is unnecessary and burdensome.

4.       H4549 threatens to diminish the civic work of churches, social groups, schools, community organizations youth groups, collegiate clubs and individual volunteers who strive really hard to get South Carolinians involved in the democratic process.

5.       South Carolina placed 42nd among the states in voter participation in 2008.  Our priority should be adding new voters to the rolls not punishing volunteer efforts that help American citizens become involved in choosing those who govern in our society.

Stand up for our right to vote!
