Event description

Description

AJ Granda and Jelica Nuccio are hosting a Protactile workshop at HSDC!

AJ and Jelica's description is below.

This workshop will focus on the perspective of the DeafBlind Way in our community. As DeafBlind people, we educate our families, friends, educators, legislators, interpreters, SSPs, and others that our needs are the responsibility of the community. Because of the need for services and funding to support our lives, we are stuck in a paradigm that centers around the concept of deafblindness. Deafblindness is a medicalized view that focuses on our "special" requirement of services due to perceived disability. This medicalization of DeafBlind people limits what people percieve we can do. It creates an attitude that is based on a lack of understanding of what we are capable of. There is another way, and it is the DeafBlind Way. This way has been developed by DeafBlind people, and is an effective approach that allows us to work effectively with each other in the community.

During this workshop, various techniques of backchanneling will be illustrated with a focus on how visual information is transmitted tactually. We will also explore boundries when applying various tactile language.

It is on Saturday, January 20th, 2018 from 9AM-5PM in the 1st floor large conference room.

It is worth .7 CEU’s, and lunch will be provided.

Early bird registration is $80 until 12/20/17.

Late registration is $100 until the day before the event.

This event will be filmed so by registering and attending, you are agreeing to be filmed.

There is limited space, so please register ASAP if interested!
