Prospering In A Crazy World!!

About this Event

AAPA in partnership with Global Federation of Chinese Business Women, Greater Los Angeles Chapter #66th (GFCBW-GLA) and Asian Pacific Community Fund (APCF) presents:

“Prospering in a Crazy World!!”

We’re living in such unchartered and complicated times. It feels like an alternate world in which everything is broken. We don’t have a common source of information and the information that gets through is often incomprehensible or contradictory. It’s often reported, for example, that the U.S. unemployment rate is extremely low, yet so many people are working two jobs (or more) to be able to pay their bills. With the influence of technology surging, no one knows what jobs will look like ten or twenty years from now. And so many college grads are choking on student loan debt that cripples their ability to buy a house or save for retirement while they are unable to find job or career opportunities in their chosen field. People with advanced degrees are driving for UBER or making lattes at Starbucks. The cost of housing, both rents and mortgages, is unbearable. College students are experiencing real food insecurity and increasingly living in their cars. Homelessness is at a dire level and growing at an alarming rate while the stock market is near record highs.

So what are we supposed to do?

What’s the best strategy to follow for my career? How do I know when it’s the right time to leave my job if I want to start my own company? What risks do I need to consider before changing my profession or industry?

What’s the best way to save and invest to send my kids to college and for my retirement? Is the stock market going to crash? If it does, what should I do? Is investing in real estate better than investing in stocks? Is there a bubble in real estate prices? Is it possible for real estate prices to crash like they did in 2008-2012?

AAPA has assembled a special panel of experts to help answer your questions and give you some insight and perspective on all of these issues.

Expert Panelists:

Jennifer Li

Entrepreneaur and Career Expert

Jennifer Li has had two separate careers – both extraordinarily successful. After earning her Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Fu Jen Catholic University in Taiwan and her MBA from Texas Women's University, she began her career in the Budget and Research Department for the City of Dallas. She worked tirelessly and it didn’t take long for her supervisor to promote her, but Jennifer declined on the basis that she wasn’t ready. When her supervisor successfully convinced her to accept that promotion, Ms. Li began to prosper and work her way up the ranks in the City of Dallas eventually holding several key executive positions. At times, she served as the Director of Budget and Research Department overseeing a $1.5 billion budget, Executive Assistant Director of the Dallas Police Department, and Director of International Business and Protocol Services, a position Jennifer proposed the City create to promote and brand Dallas globally and facilitate international investment, emphasizing collaboration with China.

In 2008 an entrepreneur approached Ms. Li and offered her the opportunity to partner with him and serve as President and Managing Partner of a new venture. It was a difficult decision because Jennifer was anticipating another promotion from the City of Dallas at that time, and had her eye on hitting 30 years of service thereby earning 90% of her salary in retirement. But her entrepreneurial spirit was awakened and Ms. Li left her stable, comfortable career to begin a new one full of new risks.

The first two years were very difficult for Jennifer. She worked tirelessly day and night, living in her office. She was committed to developing a new, very novel nutritional supplement and led the company’s research department in developing a powdered form of omega-3 fish oil. When that work was completed and her company was awarded a patent on this innovative product, it marked the beginning of a great success. Today the company, Novotech Nutraceuticals, manufacturers and exports a variety of nutritional supplements and ingredients to 31 countries.

In 2016, Ms. Li was also named the World Top 10 Outstanding Chinese Business Women Entrepreneurs.

Reed Bender

Stock Market Expert

Reed Bender began his career with Robert Bender and Associates after earning his Bachelor of Arts in English and Communication from the University of the Pacific. Today, he serves as Lead Portfolio Manager and Director of Research overseeing management of client portfolios and ongoing research for the Pasadena-based firm. One of Reed’s foundational principals of long-term wealth creation in the stock market is not reacting to market activity. In 1987, 2000-01,and 2008-09, markets reacted violently to economic news and many individual investors lost substantial portions of their investment because they panicked and sold. Some people concluded from these market events that investing in stocks is gambling and not appropriate for substantial portions of their total net worth. “During times like those, I stuck with disciplined management principals and helped clients navigate their emotions, dissuading them from taking actions they would later regret,” says Reed. “The truth is that investing in high-quality growth companies over long periods of time is the most powerful way to create sustainable wealth,” he adds.

Mr. Bender is a frequent guest on CNBC, Bloomberg Television and Bloomberg Radio where he shares his views on markets and individual companies. He is a member of The CFA Society of Los Angeles and The CFA Institute.
