Event description

Description

For young refugees, the right to work is vital for reducing vulnerability, enhancing resilience, and restoring dignity. Harnessing refugees’ skills can also benefit local economic activities and national development in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). However, development practitioners and governments are facing many challenges to provide access to the labor market in the hosting countries, especially since general unemployment rates are high. As a result, many young refugees work in the informal economy, where they may be subject to exploitation, discrimination and arrest.

A wide range of actors, from multilateral institutions, national agencies, international and local CSO, etc. are active in designing and implementing legal pathways to employment and entrepreneurship for refugees. Therefore, SPARK, IsDB, and ISFD are bringing together development partners, key donors, governments, representatives of multilateral institutions, NGOs, private sector, academia and entrepreneurs to discuss opportunities to enhance economic inclusion of refugees and host communities in MENA. We will discuss various methods, such as providing access to equitable decent employment and skills development (vocational training); entrepreneurship opportunities (access to markets); access to financial and technical resources and advisory services for growth oriented existing SMEs. Besides learning lessons on how to better plan and implement activities, concrete policy recommendations will be formulated and presented to policy makers. The conference also offers an unique opportunity for stakeholders to find innovative solutions based on the needs of young refugees in the region.
