“Prose and Poetry of Cape Cod” with Rhoda Flaxman

Mondays, 1-3 p.m. at Wellfleet Preservation Hall

October 21-November 18

Cape Cod has always inspired writers to examine the human condition and, particularly, relationships between humans and the natural world. But do writings about the Cape constitute a unique tradition? Do writers who live and work among us emphasize recurrent themes, subjects, techniques, and visions? This semester Cape Cod Lit will explore this and other questions via poem, novel and memoir. Together we will read poems by Mary Oliver, Alice Hoffman’s Blackbird Hill, and George Howe Colt’s The Big House. As we read each work we will ask which concepts and questions about Cape writing are unique to our lives here and which are universal. The class will combine mini-lectures with directed discussion for a lively seminar experience appropriate to all ages and backgrounds.

Professor Flaxman retired (2007) from teaching Victorian literature and art history, and directing Brown University ’s writing-across-the curriculum program at Brown University for twenty years. Since then she has established an educational consulting firm (WriteConsulting) , and teaches community seminars in literature in Providence and Wellfleet.

Open University of Wellfleet

Open University of Wellfleet is a forum for learning more about Wellfleet's cultural history.  Conceived by retired Brown University professor Rhoda Flaxman, the Open University began in April 2013 with five four-week courses.  All courses have a Wellfleet or Outer Cape connection, with an emphasis on our local history and culture.

These courses are envisioned as directed discussions, otherwise known as collaborative learning. Readings will be assigned, and instructors will offer mini-lectures to spur focused interchanges and facilitate learning. The Spring 2014 Classes will be held once a week for two hours from April 1st through May 8th at Wellfleet Preservation Hall, Wellfleet Library or W.H.A.T. Consult course descriptions above for date, time, and place. Courses will run with a minimum of ten and a maximum of seventeen participants.
