Proposal Writing Fundamentals
Overview
The Office of Research Advancement (ORA) invites UB researchers to an interactive workshop on the fundamentals of competitive grant writing. The session will introduce strategies for matching research ideas with suitable funding opportunities, interpreting solicitations, and developing competitive proposals.
Through guided exercises and real examples, participants will learn how to:
- Frame innovative and feasible research ideas
- Align proposals with agency priorities and reviewer expectations
- Strengthen clarity, structure, and overall impact
- Integrate elements such as mentoring, evaluation, and broader impacts
- Identify strategies to revise and strengthen previously declined proposals
The workshop will emphasize core principles of effective proposal writing, with examples drawn primarily from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), as well as other select agencies. The session will be interactive, offering participants opportunities to reflect on and apply these strategies to their own proposals.
Participants will gain actionable tools, practical writing techniques, and a clearer understanding of ORA’s proposal development services—including how to partner with our team from idea generation through submission.
Faculty and researchers from any disciplinary background are encouraged to attend.
A detailed agenda will be shared with registered participants closer to the event.
Check-in will begin at 8:30am. Lunch will be provided.
