Promoting Sexual Health and Healing After Childhood Sexual Trauma: A Holistic Approach
Kelly Ace, PhD, JD
(Introductory Level Workshop | Co-Sponsored with Family Support Line)
Sexuality is an integral part of human existence shaped by biological, social, and environmental forces. Childhood sexual trauma can have a profound impact on an individual’s sexual development, expression, and health. To help survivors heal emotionally and sexually, clinicians must have a good grasp of human sexual development and traumatic sexualization. They must also be aware of how their own sexuality-related values, beliefs, and experiences may influence their work with clients. This program will provide an overview of human sexual development during childhood and adolescence and discuss how childhood sexual trauma may contribute to problematic sexual behavior and other sexual difficulties. Participants will be introduced to techniques for addressing clients’ psychosexual concerns and encouraged to explore how their own values and beliefs may influence and interfere with treatment.
Participation in this program will enable you to:
1. Identify at least three influences on children’s sexual development.
2. Identify at least three ways in which childhood sexual trauma may influence sexuality.
3. Identify at least three ways in which clinicians’ sexuality-related values, beliefs, and experiences may influence their work with survivors of sexual trauma.
4. Explain why it is important to view clients’ sexuality as more than just their sexual activity.
5. Describe how an understanding of healthy sexuality can enhance the mental health and wellbeing of survivors of sexual trauma.
