Event description
Promoting Quality of Care for LGBT Older Adults: Issues and Strategies

About this Event

This series of workshops for promoting quality of care for LGBT older adults will be held in March and April 2020. Content explores in depth relevant topics and ways of improving practice skills. This initiative has been made possible by a grant to SAGE/Rhode Island from the Rhode Island Foundation through the Equity Action Fund. Recognizing that LGBT elders comprise a distinctly disadvantaged population, workshops will convey knowledge and best practice skills for meeting the needs of a growing but often invisible and underserved minority.

These workshops will enable participants to:

Describe demographic trends relevant to LGBT aging

Identify health disparities and healthcare needs of LGBT older adults

Discuss caregiver and care planning issues raised by the Gen Silent documentary

Identify strategies for caring for LGBT older adults including those with HIV/AIDS

Discuss issues confronting transgender adults and community resources

Describe characteristics of affirming agencies and services delivering quality care

Each workshop is focused toward a specific setting, hospitals, long term care or assisted living facilities and community-based agencies. Participants will choose a date most appropriate for their work setting. Workshops will be led by Professor Patricia Burbank, DNSc, RN, FAAN with presentations by local experts in the field of aging and LGBT services. Resources developed by SAGE/USA and the National Resource Center on LGBT Aging will be made available.

The workshop schedule is as follows:

March 18, 2020 - Hospital and Primary Care

April 15, 2020 - Long Term Care & Assisted Living

April 22, 2020 - Community-based Agencies

Participants who attended both the first and follow up workshop receive a certificate of completion. Applications are in process for three (3) continuing education credits (CEU) to be awarded for social workers, in cross-cultural practice, nurses and long term care and assisted living administrators. A program goal is to assist interested participants to become designated LGBT resource staff for their settings. All health care, social service and community-based senior service staff are welcome to attend. The curriculum will be similar for each session, but questions and discussion may vary. While all sessions are open, participants may choose one most relevant to their work setting. There is a capacity limit of 40 people per session.

Advanced registration through Eventbrite is required with a workshop fee of $35. All workshops will be held at the Radisson Hotel in Warwick, 2081 Post Rd., Warwick, RI 02886. Registration and breakfast start at 8:00 am. The program begins at 8:15 am
