Event description

Description

How can we change our students from answer-getters into mathematical thinkers? Effective discourse goes beyond explaining the formulaic steps to solving a problem. Students learn mathematics best when they engage in productive struggle with cognitively demanding mathematics problems, share their thinking with peers, and use their shared thinking to build and deepen understanding. Participants will be introduced to the Five Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematics Discussions protocol and visit classrooms to observe implementation.

- Familiarity with content and protocols being presented to teachers so that administration can develop look fors and common language.

- Understand the five practices that are integral to promoting student discourse.

- Identify and develop cognitively demanding mathematical tasks aligned to instructional outcomes.

- Learn how to select and sequence the flow of discussion to make mathematical connections.

- Facilitate meaningful discourse through posing purposeful questions
