Event description

Description

There is often at least one child in every class that struggles to speak comfortably to adults and/or peers at school. Sometimes, you will have never heard their voice! Although these children tend not to create overt disruptions in the class, their lack of speech greatly interferes with their learning, social/emotional development, and safety. For example, a child may be unable to communicate that they are hurt, that they need to use the washroom, or that they need help with their work. In the classroom, teachers often struggle with getting these children to participate in “show and tell”, partner-work, presentations, or to even answer any question. It can become nearly impossible to accurately evaluate their academic progress. In this workshop, you will learn (1) how to distinguish between typical shyness and problematic lack of speech (selective mutism), (2) how school professionals are in the ideal position to support these students, and (3) cutting-edge strategies for promoting brave talking within the school setting.

This workshop is led by Dr. Marei Perrin and Dr. Barbara Kennedy, of Victoria Child and Youth Mental Health. All educators and support workers are encouraged to attend.
