The Promise Players will present the comedy, “Don’t Kick the Turkeys” by Andy and Jennifer Hansen. It is a feel-good, 1 ½ hour, family comedy about a church that, at this point in its history, is in its 20th year and hiring its 20th pastor.

This play will benefit the Clinic for Special Children, located in the Strasburg area. Their mission is to serve children and adults who suffer from genetic and other complex medical disorders by providing comprehensive medical, laboratory, and consultative services, and by increasing and disseminating knowledge of science and medicine.

It is only Rev. Thompson's third day as pastor of New Hope Church. The pastor wants to try new things and make some changes within the traditions of the church. His secretary lays down the laws of the office, the janitor is "fixing" everything in sight, the most prestigious member of the congregation is on the war path and an eccentric lay-person presents some far out ideas for Sunday morning's special. When the cast of strange and eccentric congregation members gets the false word that the pastor is dying, they allow him to change some of what the stale church calls tradition but is more about being stubborn and unforgiving. The calamity and humor only escalate when a daycare moves into the church building after the pipes in their own building burst. As everyone finds out the pastor won’t be ‘departing’ from them soon, it is too late to turn back. Can God work in such a situation? Along side the laughs are striking similarities to almost every church.

The play will be performed at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, on November 1-2, and 7-9 at 7:30 p.m. and matinees will be performed on Saturdays and Sundays November 2nd, 3rd, 9th, and 10th, beginning at 2:30 p.m.

A suggested minimum donation of $9 for adults is payable at the door by cash or credit card. Children 12 years old and under may bring the donation of a canned good or $2. Free baby-sitting for preschoolers is available at all performances. Food donations are also being accepted to benefit the food bank at Alpha and Omega Family Life Center in Lancaster. Credit card users are invited to cover the additional charges (+$1) for use of cards.

Seating is general admission and reservations are strongly encouraged to ensure a seat for the play, though seating is on a first come, first served basis. Doors will open one hour prior to show time. Reserved seats that are unpaid are held until 20 minutes prior to show time. Seats that are saved for others (no matter how many) must be paid for at the door. Patrons without reservations on sold out nights may choose to wait and see if seats become available. To reserve a seat, visit our website at lampcob.com/promise-players, or, if needed, call the church office M-F from 8:30 - 2:30 at 717-464-2050.

If you come, you’ll just never look at duct tape in the same way.
