Programming Fundamentals for Non-Programmers: Intensive Workshop

Session 1: Saturday, October 19th from 10:00 - 2:00 PM (lunch included)
Session 2: Saturday, October 19th from 2:00 - 6:00 PM
Session 3: Sunday, October 20th from 10:00 - 4:30 PM (lunch included)

 

Are you a creative or entrepreneur that wishes you could speak tech with your web development team? Maybe you wish you could code a bit yourself? Programming for Non-Programmers is a workshop series at General Assembly designed to help non-programmers communicate more efficiently with developers. Because leading a development team (without being a developer yourself) can sometimes feels like “talking about dancing”, we’ve created an interactive and friendly environment in which to learn the basics. 

If you're running a tech start-up, it's essential that you familiarize yourself with the fundamentals of web development. Ultimately knowing how to "talk to the talk" will help you communicate better with developers, and overall just look really cool. Come with questions, and a desire to have fun!

Part 1 (Saturday Morning) - The Basics:

You will be introduced to a broad overview of programming and learn the following along the way:

The tech speak:

  • What is programming?
  • What can you build with various languages?
  • What is web development?
  • The difference between a web site and web app
  • Stages of web development
  • What is user experience
  • The difference between front-end and back-end web development
  • What are common programming concepts?
  • The basics of code:
    • HTML/CSS & JavaScript
    • Demo, read and update simple examples of code.

Part 2 (Saturday Afternoon) - Front End Web Development:

We will code a website from scratch together and learn the following along the way:

HTML basics

  • How to get set up on your own computer
  • Use the basic content tags (headings, images, links, paragraphs)
  • Create different sections in your website (layout)

CSS basics

  • Basic styling properties and how to connect with HTML
  • Selectors and how the different sections of a site

You will also learn:

  • How to upload a web page to a server using FTP
  • The difference between HTML5/CSS3 and HTML/CSS
  • The purpose of JavaScript and how it drives interactivity in your site.

Part 3 (Sunday) - Back End Web Development:

You will be introduced to back-end technologies and learn the following along the way:

Basics of web apps:

  • The components of a web app
  • How to build a very simple web app using Rails or Node.js
  • The purpose of web frameworks
  • What is an API?
  • The purpose of databases and their major components
  • Write a simple program that uses variables and takes user input
  • Create a "hello world" web app and customize it.

Pre-requisites

  • Laptop required for all three days of class (preferably Mac, since that's what will be used for examples on screen).
  • Sessions can be taken together or individually but must be taken in order. Ie - Programming for Non-Programmers Session I is a pre-req for Session II and Session III.
 


About the Instructor

Jen Aprahamian is a full stack developer and member of the General Assembly teaching faculty. She especially enjoys teaching beginner-level courses and fundamentals, because learning to code should be fun and accessible for everyone.
