Event description

Description

Dr. Melvin Pender, Jr. (born October 31, 1937 in Atlanta, Georgia) is an American athlete, winner of a gold medal in the 4x100 m relay at the 1968 Summer Olympics, decorated Hero and served two tours in the Vietnam War. However, Mel continues to live his life on purpose by co-authoring his new book (Expression of Hope: The Mel Pender Story) and by speaking around the globe--inspiring younger generations to reach their life's goals and aspirations through diligence and resiliency. Hear more about Mel, our Positive Aging Icon Image Award Honoree, and 20 other elders being served by LeadingAge Georgia members, who exhibit unique qualities of positive aging. Join us for the dialogue and experience the living gallery to engage with Georgia’s elders in their quest for positive aging at the Atlanta History Center!

About the Event: Profiles of Positive Aging Image Awards honors and celebrates Elders who continue to live their Lives on Purpose. The focus is not on chronology, rather on wisdom from life-long experiences shared with other generations. Since 2012, LeadingAge Georgia members, the Georgia Institute on Aging, and collaborative partners like AARP Georgia have been forging this important movement to overcome ageism in our society. Register your honoree's profile for consideration for this Tribute via the following link no later than August 31, 2017 at 11:59 p.m.: https://form.jotform.us/21493468894166

About the Sponsors: Consumers can count on LeadingAge Georgia, the Georgia Institute on Aging, and the Center for Positive Aging as the trusted voice and source for senior living and care options. LeadingAge Georgia members, the Georgia Institute on Aging, and collaborative partners like AARP Georgia have been forging this important movement to overcome ageism in our society. As Katie Sloan, the CEO of LeadingAge national, puts it--Ageism is one of the last socially acceptable "isms" in American society. However, we intend to break down this barrier.

Come and experience the living gallery and hear the myriad fascinating stories of our honorees, during the Profiles of Positive Aging Image Awards Gala on Nov 5th at the Atlanta History Center. Pick up a copy of Dr. Melvin Pender's autobiography, Expression of Hope--The Mel Pender Story, co-authored with his wife Debbie. There will be a book signing for Mel & Debbie during the gala as well.
