Inaugural Lecture

Reflections on the Political Nature of Sport

Professor Jonathan Grix

Thursday 31st May | Lecture Theatre G.33

This lecture mixes the personal with the professional by tracing the route that took Professor Jonathan Grix from a middle-distance runner to the UK’s only Professor in Sports Policy. While debates have raged as to whether sport is political or not, or whether sport and politics can and ought to be kept separate, Jonathan has spearheaded a revival of the study of the political nature of sports, terming this area ‘Sport Politics’. Mainstream political science in the UK and globally has barely turned its attention to sport, despite the substantial increase in government interventions in sport in the last 30 years; the discipline of international relations has only recently began to draw on sport and its use by states to achieve political ends. In this lecture, Professor Grix suggests that sport can be used as a case study through which we can learn a great deal about politics, policy-making and society.
