Understanding Your Job as Product Manager

Specifically designed for product managers with 1+ years of experience and no previous formal training, this course - led by trainer Emily Tate - lays the building blocks for understanding the product manager role, creating a framework that enables participants to be effective product managers who can consistently deliver on a product vision. The workshop will be held on Friday, January 26 at a dedicated venue in Irving, Texas. We'll also provide a buffet lunch and plenty of tea and coffee to fuel you through the day.

The Workshop

While there are many skills that are important to the product manager role, the first and most important is problem inquiry and how a deep understanding of a customer problem can help fuel innovative solutions. This class focuses on the components of the role that provide confidence that you are moving in the right product direction and building the right thing. The course covers:

  • Product Discovery overview and how to plan for learning

  • Persona creation and getting alignment on who you are serving

  • Crafting a user interview guide that helps get the right information

  • Designing hypotheses and validating them

  • Creating prototypes that validate feature concepts

  • User stories as communication tools

  • Creating a team culture that creates continuous improvement

The class is driven by case studies designed to let participants get hands-on with the concepts immediately. Additionally, the instructor’s product management experience delivers diverse perspectives on best practice, how to spot red flags, and what works in different scenarios.

This class focuses on how to start understanding the problem and test hypotheses and prototypes before committing to a solution. As such, it does not go into solution metrics, OKRs or KPIs. It also does not discuss quantitative data, business model validation, or acceptance testing. These concepts are covered in our Essentials 102 workshop, which we plan to schedule more of very soon.

Designed for product managers who want to lay the foundation for progression and development, participants will leave with a clear understanding as to what they are empowered to do, and the frameworks that provide support to get them started.

Workshop Agenda:

  • Registration will begin at 09.00

  • Class will start at 9.30 sharp and end at 17.00
