Description

This lecture by Anna Leander will address Private Military Companies (PMCs) and give an overview of ethical issues, followed by a discussion round.

Since the war in Iraq, PMCs increasingly play a relevant role in conflicts all around the world. With the Blackwater Scandal in 2007 the issues resulting from the outsourcing of military services finally hit the mainstream news and remain as relevant today, as they ever were before.

Anna Leander, professor at the Copenhagen Business School, is an expert on commercial security, the private military market and PMCs. In her research, she focuses on how PMCs can alter states security policies in favour of a military understanding - which especially is relevant when looking at the US.

**Structure**
The lecture will start with a 45min introduction by Anna Leander about the current situation, her own work, why she is interested in the private military market and how she approaches these issues. Following this, we open the floor to a lively discussion with you and encourage you to raise the questions about PMCs you are interested in.
Questions could be about:
  • Accountability - who can be held accountable when international law is violated?
  • Transparency - how can we generate transparency if military services are being outsourced to PMCs and their subcontractors?
  • The issue of child soldiers & market rules - who is employed by PMCs?
  • Security policies - how can the employment of PMCs alter state's security perceptions?

**Anna Leander about herself:**

"My research focuses on the role of business in international politics and especially on the role of private military and security companies. My publications direct attention the politics of commercial security and develop theoretical approaches and methodologies suited for studying it. In recent work I explore the transformation of politics through commercial security expertise, risk-models, and regulatory arrangements drawing on and developing sociological practice approaches. My present projects explore the politics of commercial security knowledge as re-produced in marketing, web-communication and digitized/big data. This work is developed in the context of collaborative projects about security knowledge/expertise more generally."
