Private Equity (PE) investment funds are major players in the growth path of healthcare technology companies. Bruce Robertson, Managing Director of H.I.G. BioHealth Partners, will be the keynote speaker. H.I.G. is one of the largest PE firms in the world.

Following Bruce Robertson’s remarks, a panel will share their experiences working with PE firms. The panel includes CEOs who have lead med tech companies with PE investors. Paul LaViolette, SV Health Investors, Gabriele Brambilla, CEO of Alira Health will be on the panelist.

Speaker Bios

Gabriele Brambilla, Chief Executive Officer, Alira Health

Since 2010, Gabriele Brambilla has been responsible for running Alira Health’s US location in Boston, Massachusetts. In 2014, Gabriele became CEO of Alira Health. He has run strategy projects in fluid management, medical imaging and infection control. During his time with Alira Health, Gabriele has developed a strong expertise in the medical device contract manufacturing market and has executed many M&A projects in that specific segment.

Before his time at Alira Health, Gabriele Brambilla received his BA in Political Science from the University of Pavia, a Master in International Affairs from the I.S.P.I. and an MBA from Post Graduate SDA Bocconi – both in Milan, Italy. He began his career in Shanghai (China) working for an Italian Pharmaceutical Company with a business partner selection task.

Tom Burns, President & Chief Executive Officer, Resonetics

Tom joined Resonetics in 2012 as CEO, bringing 25 years of experience in the medical device and contract manufacturing industries. Prior to joining Resonetics, he was V.P. Business Development at Tegra Medical, a diversified contract manufacturer providing precision metal machining services. Before Tegra, Tom was V.P. Sales & Marketing at Web Industries, a contract converter serving the in vitro diagnostics, aerospace and consumer products industries. Tom spent nine years in sales and marketing leadership roles at both Accellent and two of the companies it acquired. For the first 11 years of his career, he worked in various sales and marketing roles at Genzyme, Edwards LifeSciences and Johnson & Johnson. Tom graduated with honors from Northeastern University with a B.S. in Business Administration.

Paul LaViolette, Managing Partner, Chief Operating Officer, SV Health Investors

Mr. LaViolette is Managing Partner at SV Health Investors, a leading life sciences growth equity and venture capital investor. He is currently chairman of the board for: CardioFocus, Corvia Medical, Endotronix, TransEnterix, Ximedica and ValenTx. In addition, Mr. LaViolette is chairman of MDMA, the medical device industry association, and vice chairman of the Innovation Advisory Board for the Partners Health System. He also serves as the lead investor and director for Bardy Diagnostics, CSA Medical, Soffio Medical, Solsys Medical and Stimwave, and is a director at Axon Therapies.

Prior to joining SV Health Investors, Mr. LaViolette spent nearly three decades building and leading medical device businesses. Most recently, he spent 15 years at Boston Scientific Corporation where he served at various times as President of Cardiology and International, Group President of Cardiovascular and Endosurgery, and Chief Operating Officer. During Mr. LaViolette’s tenure, Boston Scientific grew 25 fold. Prior to joining BSC, Mr. LaViolette spent 14 years at CR Bard and Kendall in general management and commercial leadership roles.

Mr. LaViolette received his BA in Psychology from Fairfield University and his MBA from Boston College.

Bruce Robertson, Managing Director of H.I.G. BioHealth Partners

As Co-head and Managing Director of H.I.G. BioHealth Partners, Bruce focuses on investment opportunities in the life sciences sector, including biopharmaceuticals, medical devices, and diagnostics. H.I.G. BioHealth is the dedicated healthcare fund managed by H.I.G. Capital, a $31 billion global private equity firm. Bruce currently serves on the boards of Apollo Endosurgery, RxSight, CardioFocus, Clarus Therapeutics, and Iconic Therapeutics.

Bruce has been active in the life sciences sector for 30 years. Prior to joining H.I.G., Bruce served as Managing Director at Toucan Capital, a venture capital fund focusing on healthcare investments. While at Toucan, Bruce invested in leading drug and device companies throughout the U.S. Prior to Toucan, Bruce was a General Partner at GIV Venture Partners, a venture capital firm he co-founded to make investments in the US, India, and China. Prior to his private equity career, Bruce was Director of Business Development at IGEN International, where he was responsible for strategic partnering and M&A. Bruce started his career as a Research Manager at W.R. Grace & Co., focusing on medical devices.

Bruce is on the boards of the University of Delaware Research Foundation and the BioLife Fund of Virginia’s Center for Innovative Technology. Bruce holds a BSE in Chemical Engineering and BA in Mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania, a PhD in Chemical/Biomedical Engineering from the University of Delaware, and an MBA with High Distinction from Harvard Business School.

Rick Williams, Managing Director, Williams Advisory Partners, LLC

Rick is Managing Director of Williams Advisory Partners, LLC. He has a breadth of experience as an executive and board director for technology companies including medical technology and financial services. Williams Advisory Partners provides CEO and board advisory services for middle market technology companies. Rick founded and was President of The Equity Company, an award winning multifamily real estate investment and development company. He was Chairman of the Board of Point Care Technologies and formerly was Chairman of a quasi-public bank/VC firm providing financing to companies with limited access to conventional financing. Rick is past President of the Harvard Business School Association of Boston. He was a management consultant with the global consulting firm Arthur D. Little, Inc., working on business strategy and acquisitions and the economic and strategic impact of government policy and regulations on a broad spectrum of industries. Before that, he was a physicist with Itek Corp, where he developed space and defense related photo & electro/optical systems.
