PRISON STORIES is a Voices of the South outreach program created and coordinated by Elaine Blanchard. It is a 16-week series of storytelling workshops for women in the Shelby County Jail that culminates in a performance within the jail and public performances at TheatreSouth.
“Our stories build a bridge that reaches across the razor wire and connects all of us, the story teller and the story listener, as neighbors.” ~ Elaine Blanchard
Memphis Symphony Orchestra has been engaged in this series of Prison Stories classes, by providing a string quartet to attend classes within the jail. These four talented musicians have shared their music and personal stories as part of the creative process. The experience of hearing these musicians’ stories coupled with the classical sounds of their instruments has been liberating for class participants. This string quartet will also be playing as accompanists for both the performance inside the jail and for the three public performances of Prison Stories VIII at TheatreSouth. Voices of the South is proud to present and celebrate this public debut of new work from our community.
