Primitive Rug Hooking for Beginners is an introductory course into the traditional North American craft of rug hooking. Dating back to pioneer times, rug hooking recycles common materials into utilitarian objects for the home. This course will teach the original technique used in rug hooking and allow you to create beautiful textile art pieces that will brighten your floors and walls. Instructor: Hayley Perry

Goals: Each student will complete one 10 x 10 inch geometric hooked mat with the shapes and colors of their choosing. Students will learn about some basic design elements (emphasis on color, contrast, and texture) and learn some traditional geometric fiber art designs (hit and miss, cat’s paw, log cabin, etc.). Students will also learn the correct hooking and finishing techniques to complete their rug (blanket stitch).

The following materials will be provided:

Rulers, Wool Cutter, Plastic stencils, Sharpies, 1 Rug hooking Kit (Pattern on monks cloth, 1 rug hooking hook, Binding to finish rug, Hand-dyed, hand cut wool strips to finish the rug, 1 Quilting hoop).

Students must bring the following:

Scissors, needle and thread, sharpie marker (optional)

Material fee: $50 per kit. 1 kit per student. (Please pay the instructor)

This course meets weekly on Tuesday mornings for 6 consecutive weeks, with a break the week of Thanksgiving.
