Event description

Description

Join Dr. Thomas Jackson of the UH Uehiro Academy and p4cHawai‘i at an engaging pau hana talk in the Hanahau‘oli School Professional Development Center on Wednesday, July 17 at 5:30pm.

Pupus and refreshments will be provided.

“In varying degrees, all of us at some point wonder. Significantly, the philosopher Plato maintained that wonder marks the beginning of philosophy. Plato however, didn't say when this wonder itself begins. This talk presents the idea that we ALL are born with a special vibrant, open, intense wonder that I call PRIMAL WONDER.” -- Thomas Jackson, PhD (Dr. J)

Engage with Dr. J and other members of the education and philosophy communities in an exploration of what Primal Wonder is and why we should cultivate it. Primal Wonder -- fueled by an insatiable curiosity and coupled with our growing facility with language -- unleashes a seemingly inexhaustible flood of persistent "But why?" questions. It marks the beginning of our efforts to make sense of our world, our "little p" philosophy. Most people concede that this initial flood sadly reduces to a trickle as we grow, as does our "little p" philosophy. Dr. J will share his methods for listening carefully to the wonderings of young children and responding in a gently Socratic way to re-ignite our own primal wonder and create a refreshingly deeper relationship with ourselves, our children and others.

About the Presenter:

Dr. Thomas Jackson (Dr. J) is Director of the UH Uehiro Academy for Philosophy and Ethics in Education. In 1979 he received his doctorate in Comparative Philosophy from the University of Hawai'i. In 1984 he learned of the work of Dr. Matthew Lipman, creator of the now world-recognized initiative Philosophy for Children (P4C). Inspired by a three-week training at Montclair State College which was conducted by Dr. Lipman & Ann Margaret Sharp, and attended by some 30 international educators, Dr. J returned to Hawai'i, intent on bringing this incredibly rich, promising initiative to Hawai'i. philosophy for children Hawai'i (p4cHawai'i) is our own "home grown" expression of Lipman's original inspiration.
