Event description
Join Food Bank For New York City for a Pride Month Virtual Service Hour to learn about how Food Bank supports LGBTQ+ New Yorkers.

About this event

Throughout the month of June, Food Bank will spotlight organizations across our member network that use food and other resources to empower LGBTQ+ New Yorkers. This will culminate with a special Pride Month Virtual Service Hour on June 30, during which volunteers are invited to join us via Zoom to write personal letters to benefit New Yorkers living with HIV in collaboration with our partners at GMHC. June marks the 40th anniversary of the HIV epidemic in the US, so there’s never been a better time to show up and stand up for this community.

Before COVID-19, 1 in 5 LGBTQ+ New Yorkers was facing food insecurity. The economic fallout from the pandemic has only exacerbated this crisis, with food prices continuing to climb and unemployment rates remaining high. To support our LGBTQ+ neighbors across the city, we partner with and provide food to organizations that are able to tailor their programming to meet the unique needs of the LGBTQ+ community.

We hope you'll join us to fight on and feed all -- this month and throughout the year!

WHAT TO EXPECT: GMHC Director of Community Relations Krishna Stone will join Food Bank to discuss GMHC's vital work to uplift and support New Yorkers living with HIV. Food Bank's Volunteer Engagement Team will then guide participants in a breakout session to write personal letters of hope and compassion to GMHC clients. Volunteers will be responsible for mailing their completed letters to the address provided.

WHEN: Wednesday, June 30th, 2021 , 6:00-7:00pm EST. We ask that all volunteers register in advance to receive the Zoom link.

WHERE: This virtual event will be held via Zoom. A link will be shared by email with all registered volunteers prior to the event.

WHO: Volunteers of all ages are welcome! This is a great opportunity for students, groups, and families to honor Pride Month in an impactful, hands-on way while serving from home.

QUESTIONS?: Contact us at volunteer@foodbanknyc.org or 212-566-7855, ext. 5.

Upon request, volunteers can receive confirmation of 1 hour of volunteer service for attending this event, as well as additional service hours for the number of letters written (1 hour per 3 letters) once letters are mailed and reported by email.
