About this event
Shortly after taking office, President Biden reaffirmed the United States' commitment to supporting LGBTQI+ persons in their ongoing struggle against discrimination and injustice.
In commemoration of Pride Month 2022, the U.S. Embassy in Nassau joins the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas in hosting a film screening series, open to the general public. On Friday, June 17, we will screen our second film in the series: the U.S. documentary film, The Lavender Scare.
With the United States gripped in the panic of the Cold War, President Dwight D. Eisenhower deems homosexuals to be "security risks" and orders the immediate firing of any government employee discovered to be gay or lesbian. It triggers a vicious witch hunt that lasts for forty years and ruins thousands of lives, while thrusting an unlikely hero into the forefront of what would become the modern LGBT rights movement. We look forward to watching and discussing the film with you!
We work toward a world where everyone has the safety and acceptance to live openly if they choose. LGBTQI+ persons share the same dreams and ambitions as everyone, and deserve to live in a society that values them as they are.
Happy Pride!
