About Juanita’s featured menu:
“The menu that I have shared with Kitchit reflects a lot about my love of food. I was that little kid that stood on a chair next to the stove as my parents cooked and was always an avid family recipe collector.
My father cooked briefly before he married my mom and taught me the importance of patience when preparing food. He loved a braise or slow roasting over a grill. My mom on the other hand, had four older sisters to cook for her - so her kitchen skills were relegated to dishwashing and tortilla making.
As a teenager I joined my cousins on my mom’s side, who were Northern California farm workers, to pick cucumbers. I wanted to understand what farm work was like. It was a long and exhausting day spent bent over in the mud. One that made me appreciate where food comes and how it gets to the table. I walked away with so much respect for the hard work my family did and about $5 in my pocket.
This special menu starts with a fresh and simple garden salad representing my families farm work. The slow roasted pork showcases my deep appreciation for my fathers’ patience in the kitchen. To end the meal the galette represents the fruit trees in my grandmothers East Bay garden. Showcasing them at their peak in the most simplest of ways.
I consider myself a great home cook who reads cookbooks, likes novels and dissects menus regularly.
Love, Juanita”
