POP3 Objective:

The Preventing Ocean Plastic Pollution Patch (POP3) program aims to empower students of the importance of not only being conscious of the plastic ocean pollution epidemic, but to inspire them to make a change. We will educate them on how small things they do can add up to make a big difference and how they can educate and inspire others to do the same. We hope to connect STEM professionals with young people in our community.

POP3 Description:

The students will participate in a variety of activities, including conservation-based educational games and hands-on working stations. They will get the opportunity to meet and talk with STEM professional volunteers from the National Marine Mammal Foundation, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and I Love A Clean San Diego who focus on ocean conservation and the prevention of plastic use and pollution. Our hope is that all these students will leave the POP3 program with the knowledge and drive to make our earth a cleaner, healthier place and that they will be excited to educate and inspire others!

Students will leave the POP3 program with an understanding of the plastic pollution epidemic that is affecting our planet. Our activities will focus on:

  • The Plastic Lifecycle: What are plastics made of? How are plastics made? How do plastic products get from the manufacturer to your front door? How do we recycle these plastics, and if it is not recyclable, what can you do with that plastic so that it doesn’t end up in a landfill?

  • Models of plastic pollution in the ocean: through an interactive game, students will learn how plastic in the oceans affects the food chain, our climate and, ultimately, human health.

  • How Plastic affects sea life & climate: Students will be exposed to important facts and statistics regarding plastic pollution and how wildlife, specifically sea life, and our climate if negatively impacted by improper disposal of plastic waste.

  • A Watershed model: An interactive enviro-scape that shows students how easily trash, plastics and waste from land-locked cities and towns are able to make their way into rivers, streams and eventually into the oceans.

  • Recycling: Students, through an interactive game, will learn which items are recyclable and which ones are not, how to prepare recyclable items so they are properly used at the recycling facility, how recycling helps the planet and why it is so important.

  • Take Action: We will be supplying ideas, resources and links to help educate students on specific things they can do to take action and to help make a change.

  • STEM Professionals: The students will be able to directly interact with STEM Professionals and will be provided with additional educational resources to inspire and assist them in pursuing a career in the STEM or environmental field!
