Description

Preventing and Responding to Challenging Behaviors Across the Spectrum

As professionals working in the field of ASD intervention and as parents of individuals with ASD, it is likely that we have all experienced challenging and persistent behaviors. When we experience these behaviors in an individual with ASD, one of the first questions we should ask ourselves is, “What is the individual trying to communicate with this behavior?” What want, need, confusion, or fear is the individual trying to express?

When we approach problem behavior in this way, it can lead us toward strategies and meaningful behavior change.

This workshop will offer strategies that families and professionals can apply to prevent problem behavior and to build better behavior.

Provided by ASNC's Clinical Department

Objectives

  • To briefly review core features of ASD
  • To identify evidence-based strategies that families and professionals can apply to prevent challenging behavior
  • To identify evidence-based reinforcement strategies designed to replace problem behavior with more appropriate behavior
  • To identify effective procedures to apply in response to challenging behavioral episodes

For more information, contact Louise Buchholz Southern, M.Ed., BCBA, Associate Clinical Director at lsouthern@autismsociety-nc.org.
