Event Details

Dear friends,

Antitrustitalia’s 48th lunch talk is scheduled on Wednesday, 21 November 2018, 12:30 pm at the European Commission’s Directorate General for Competition (DG COMP)’s Auditorium in Brussels (Place Madou 1 │ 1210 Saint-Josse-ten-Nood │ Metro Madou).

Cyril Ritter, Policy Officer in Unit A.1 (Antitrust case support and policy) at DG COMP, and James Killick, Partner at White&Case LLP, Brussels, will give a presentation in English on:

Presumptions in EU competition law: do we need more, or less?”

EU competition law often employs presumptions, both in terms of the substantive and procedural rules, which develop based on different rationales and can also evolve over time. Depending on the context they may either benefit authorities/claimants or defendants. They also raise questions of predictability, legal certainty and effectiveness of antitrust enforcement.

Cyril Ritter is a Policy Officer in the Antitrust case support and policy unit of DG Competition, where he is responsible for advising on technology cases and on emerging technology issues, including on the interaction of competition, data, and algorithms. He also advises on pharma cases, financial cases, and cartel cases. He was previously a Case Handler dealing with antitrust and merger cases in the shipping and airline sectors. Prior to joining the European Commission in 2007, Cyril was an associate at a law firm in Paris.

James Killick is a Partner at White&Case LLP in Brussels. His practice covers competition, pharmaceuticals, and international trade. He advises leading industry players in a broad range of business sectors, from information technology and chemicals to airlines and paper.

Lunch will be provided at 12:30, the presentation will begin at 13:00 and will close at 14:30. Important note: Please allow time to register at the Madou Tower desk, we recommend coming at noon.

Entrance is free for antitrustitalia’s supporters. For non-supporters, there is a fee of EUR 25 to cover the cost of the lunch. Receipts can be printed from the link directly.

As space is limited, please let us know if you are unable to attend, so that we can offer your place to other colleagues. For non-supporters, cancellation should be notified 24 hours before the event, the fee will be refunded directly from the link above.
