Description

Four different classes offered; take 1,2,3 or all 4. All on Monday evenings from 6:30pm-9:00pm. Class size for hands-on classes is limited to 16 per class to ensure a quality experience during the hands-on activities.

Basics of Safe Canning
Monday, May 15
Learn the basics of food safety and canning skills, including bacteria and food spoilage, canning equipment, and canning high/low acid foods. Demonstration of the process, no hands-on.

Jams, Jellies, & Spreads**
Monday, June 12
Learn to put 'sunshine in a jar' with fresh fruit. Demonstration and hands-on. Everyone will take home a jar of jam they helped make during the class.

Tomatoes, Salsa, & Relish**
Monday, July 17
Learn the proper way to preserve tomatoes and tomato products. Demonstration and hands-on. Everyone will take home a jar of salsa they helped make during the class.

Pickling & Fermenting**
Monday, August 14
Learn how to make crisp, tasty pickles along with the art of fermentation. Demonstration and hands-on. Everyone will take home a jar of pickles AND a jar of sauerkraut they helped make during the class.

**Prerequisite to Hands-On Classes
Please note there is a *pre-requisite class* that should be completed before attending any of the three hands-on classes. You should complete the 8-lesson online Preserve the Taste of Summer course offered through WSU and the University of Iowa. Cost for the complete online course is $25. Instructor Kate Ryan has been canning ever since she learned from her grandmother as a child. Throughout the years, her occasional failures prompted a quest to learn the best and safest methods for home food preservation. When WSU revived their home food preservation training program several years ago it was the perfect opportunity for Kate to brush off her skills and learn the most up-to-date science and protocols for safe food preservation.
