Event description

Description

PrepareRI is a statewide initiative to build career pathways for all Rhode Island youth. PrepareRI is hosting regular Summits to connect leaders and practitioners from schools, colleges, government, industry, and community groups. The PrepareRI Fall '18 Summit will be our third Summit. Our objective is to make it easy for all these stakeholders to advance PrepareRI’s goal: giving young people in Rhode Island the skills they need for job that pay.

The theme for the Fall Summit is college and career opportunities for all.

By 2020, 70% of jobs generated in Rhode Island will require education beyond a high school diploma, and many of these new opportunities will be in STEAM-related fields. Today, just 47% of Rhode Islanders have any type of post-high-school degree or credential. This gap suggests that our state still lacks education pathways to best prepare Rhode Islanders for industries with the most promise for job opportunities and growth.

Expanding work-based and experiential learning is one key way to engage Rhode Island’s youth in the state’s evolving labor market. The Rhode Island Governor’s Workforce Board defines a work-based learning activity as a planned, structured learning experience that provides youth (ages 14-24 years, in school or out of school) with real-life or simulated work experiences where they can develop and apply academic, technical, and essential skills; and that contributes to the achievement of their postsecondary and employment goal(s).

This Summit – jointly sponsored by the Governor’s Workforce Board, the Rhode Island Office of the Postsecondary Commissioner, and the Rhode Island Department of Elementary and Secondary Education – will strengthen the Ocean State’s capacity to provide our young people with opportunities they need to be college and career ready.

Summit Goals:

  • Build a network of champions committed to connecting secondary and postsecondary career pathways for in school and out of school youth in Rhode Island, especially youth from underrepresented populations.

  • Highlight promising practices and programs in career pathways.

  • Understand Rhode Island employers’ needs and hear their perspectives on high-quality work-based learning in key industries.
