“Homeland Security Perspectives for Building Cyber Security Capacity, Capability, & Resilience”

Speaker: Franco Cappa, Cyber Security Advisor with the Office of Cybersecurity & Communications at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security

As Americans, we often take for granted such everyday luxuries like clean water from the tap and energy supplied to our homes. But what if the nation’s infrastructure suddenly stopped working?

The proliferation of cyber-attacks threatens America’s infrastructure and institutions, including the fidelity of our election process. The threats are nefarious, evolving and non-stop.

The field of cybersecurity is constantly adapting in response, and new cybersecurity degree programs, including Immaculata’s Bachelor Degree in Cybersecurity (https://www.immaculata.edu/academics/degrees-programs/cybersecurity-b-s-adult-professional-studies/), are being offered to meet the demand for cybersecurity professionals.

In this hour-long event, Mr. Cappa will describe the current landscape of threats to the nation’s infrastructure—including our election system—and how education and joint efforts between government and the private sector can protect us all from cyber criminals. At the end of his presentation, he will answer questions from the audience.

Franco Cappa is the Cyber Security Advisor with the Office of Cybersecurity & Communications at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. He supports the Department of Homeland Security’s mission of strengthening the security and resilience of the nation’s critical infrastructure. In addition to preparedness, mitigation and response, Cappa’s department also provides cyber security resources, including assessments, to the nation’s 16 critical infrastructure sectors and state, local, tribal and territorial government entities.

As a certified information systems security professional, Cappa has over 30 years of experience in the information and communications technology industry, mostly devoted to security in both the cyber and physical environments. Prior to joining the Department of Homeland Security, Cappa gained experience in various technical and nontechnical industries such as chief information security officer for an intergovernmental organization and also as director of security services within higher education among other positions. Lending his expertise, Cappa has worked in the management, design, architecture and implementation of security solutions for multi-million dollar projects for customers in the Americas, Asia, Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
