Pre-Natal SBIRT Training for University Health Partners (UHP) 1.5 hours In-person training in Hilo, Hawaii (Big Island).

About this Event

Prenatal screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (Prenatal SBIRT) is effective in the pre-conception, prenatal and postpartum settings. It has been proven effective with pregnant women and is incorporated into routine prenatal care appointments. This training focuses on screening procedures to identify risk; effective use of the "I am concerned" brief intervention; and referral to treatment for patients with substance use disorder who are ready for treatment.

Target Audience

The Prenatal SBIRT training is free and is open to University Health Partners of Hawaiʻi providers and support staff who are interested in delivering Prenatal SBIRT Services: OBGYNs, PAs, APRNs, Midwives, Psychologists, LMFTs and LCSWs, Registered Nurses, Certified Substance Use Disorder Treatment Counselors and Other Behavioral Health Specialists/Clinicians, and billing staff.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of the two-hour Prenatal SBIRT Training session, participants should be able to:

1. Describe the background and rationale for conducting Prenatal SBIRT in pre-conception, prenatal and postpartum settings;

2. Explain how to utilize screening procedures to identify patients engaged in at‐risk substance use behaviors; and

3. Demonstrate a motivational interviewing‐based brief intervention strategy to assess for readiness to change and assist patients desiring to change their at‐risk behavior and/or seek treatment.
