Event description
A conversation on dating in the African American community. We will talk about preference, colorism and dating practices rooted in colorism.

About this Event

Own Your I Am and The Gentlemen's Factory present Preference: Is your rooted in colorism? A candid conversation about colorism in the African Amercan dating community. We will bring 25 men and 25 women together to have this much needed conversation. This is a talk back so come ready to share and join the conversation. We will discuss back handed compliments like "Pretty for a darkin girl", obsessions with the "exotic" look, stereotypes of lightskin vs dark skin men and women, and much more. This conversation will be facilitated by Raven Roberts, Cyrus Aaron and Enitan Bereola.

Own Your I AM (OYIA) is an organization birthed by Raven Roberts to erase the lines of colorism and the social injustice that comes from it. We believe that by erasing the lines of colorism we help mend broken people and broken communities. We want to empower women to own who they are and not what the world says about them. We want to change the way the world views dark skin in all cultures by hosting panel and roundtable discussions, school outreach and raising awareness.

There aren't enough spaces where men of color can come together, share ideas, and build with each other. We are growing individually and not as a collective. As a result, we started hosting male exclusive meet ups to stimulate conversation and share resources as a way to build camaraderie among men of color. What started out as an initiative in 2014 turned into a powerful movement. On Sept. 30th, 2016, our Founder Jeff Lindor, resigned from his career as a Government Strategist to further develop The Gentlemen's Factory. On March 2017, we opened our first location in Central Brooklyn and plan to expand to different cities in the near future.
