About this event

Precipice Improv presents Bethesda Improv and Comedy Festival

Precipice Improv Theater has been improvising full-length comic plays from audience suggestions for the past 25 years. Here's what audiences have said about our improvised comic plays over the years.

"It's not theater like you've ever seen before. It's not comfortable and controlled. It's edgy and spontaneous, original and downright dangerous." — The American University Eagle Review

"Inspired, multi-chakra, nutty! What lunatic asylum did they escape from and is there room for the rest of us? " — Kelly C.

"The cast was so talented I was floored. They made improv look so easy. It flowed as well as a scripted play, but had more energy because it was not. " — John B.

 _______________________

During the second week in January 2023, Precipice performs four completely different comic plays Jan. 12th - 14th at 8 pm and Jan. 15th at 2 pm. Before each comic play, Precipice has invited some of the area's most talented improv troupes to perform shorter improv pieces, also created from audience suggestions. And on Jan. 10th at 8 pm and Jan. 15th at 7 pm, Precipice presents two variety shows combining some of the best standup comics with other cutting-edge improv teams.

Here's the schedule.

Tuesday Jan. 10 at 8 pm

“DC Comedy Takeover,” is an exciting mix of DC area standup comics and improve groups,

hosted by popular DC standup comedian and presenter Stacey Axler.

--Sharon & Karen is a crowd-pleasing improv group that has performed at comedy festivals as far away as Oklahoma City.

Thursday Jan. 12 at 8 pm

Your Favorite Cookie improv group has been giving audience members a sugar buzz from their high-energy comedy for over four years. Two of the hottest DC Improv FIST teams joined together to form a “bad-ass cookie” team to keep bringing new flavors to the stage. Directed by Brent Buxton, a graduate of the Washingtom Improv Theater program. Cast members are Brent Buxton, Michael Cohen, Caroline Kelly, Ryan Knight, Nicky de Haay, Cate Minichino, David Schupak and Luke Slominski.

Precipice Improv: It's an open secret that special things happen on stage when their busy schedules permit Precipice veterans Bob Adler, Daniel Mont, Ric Andersen, Sheila Thibodeau, and Alice Lipowicz to perform together. We are fortunate to see their special chemistry on stage for the first time since the start of the pandemic as they improvise an entire comic play from audience suggestions. With improvised musical accompaniment by the wildly talented Paul Rosenberg. Come join the fun.

Friday Jan. 13 at 8 pm

Key City Improv – Coming to Bethesda from Frederick, MD, the members are graduates of Maryland Ensemble Theater’s Improv program. Known for their fun audience engagement styles, their members are Shannon Way, Paul Varga, Chuck Webb and Alexis Wilson.

Sunday Night Jan 15 at 7 pm

“Winter Fresh Comedy Night”

Hosted by Katie Dunn - Comic performer Katie Dunn hosts this jam-packed show of improv and standup. As a longtime improviser, improv trainer, solo performer and member of the Door #3 Musical improv group, Katie has been active on local stages as a multi-talented performer. If you’re nice she may even do a naughty Mae West impression.

Thirst Trap Trio – This up-and-coming DC improv group has been wooing audiences in DC and Baltimore since 2020, and is excited to bring the show to Bethesda. Cast members are AJ Minite, Steve Raetzman and Tarun Sinha.

Two Baboushkas improv team members practically grew up wearing baboushka scarves under their chins and it obviously left a deep impression! Improvisers Alice Lipowicz and Irina Vayndiner explore their culture heritage in this imaginative show about women in the old country and the new.

Carlic Huynh – Carlic the improviser recently was a smash hit in the 2022 Improvapalooza show hosted by Washington Improv Theater at the Source Theater. Tonight Carlic will bring his standup comedy game, which is sharp, edgy and sometimes veers way off the politeness cliff. You’ll see what I mean.

Follow the Lisa improv team is rapidly gaining a reputation around DC for their quirky and unpredictable improv comedy. Follow this team to a fun show! Cast members are Elise Buckley, Grace Campion, Courtney Chinn, Andy Detweiler, Morgan Fykes, Tim Little, Lisa Schreihart, John Sener and Lisa Silverman.

Comedian Davine Ker – Our headliner performer will thrill you, shock you, make you laugh, and convince you to immediately add her to your list of favorite comedians. Davine Ker is a trilingual stand-up comedian and multidisciplinary artist. Her art emerges from thought-provoking jokes, left-field concepts, and unique storytelling that bridges culture, comedy, music, and storytelling. She headlines throughout the DC area and in comedy clubs and festivals from NYC to LA and Montreal, Canada. She has been featured on Amazon Prime’s Comics Watching Comics and has been a Moth StorySlam winner. She also has performed at the International Lady Laughs Comedy Festival, Lincoln Theatre, the Kennedy Center, Funny Bones, DC Improv and Comedy Nest, among other venues.

About the organizer

Organized by
Precipice Improv Theater

Precipice is a non-profit theater dedicated to creating great art improvisationally.  Founded in 1996, Precipice has performed hundreds of improvised plays and taught hundreds of classes.

Our teaching philosophy is that improv classes should be fun and rigorous.

It’s rare when our students aren’t laughing for an entire class, delighting themselves and each other with the collective creativity that gets unlocked in a structured and supportive environment.

In contrast, many of the best scripted acting classes have a reputation for rigor. These teachers have high standards, and possess a deep and wide knowledge of acting training. This can lead to outstanding work, and a sense of accomplishment that is exciting and deeply satisfying.

Precipice’s improv classes combine the fun of a good improv class with a commitment to excellence, and a deep knowledge of improv. Our artistic goal is to unlock and channel students’ collective creativity to produce great scenes and plays, scenes and plays that are as good as the best scripted scenes and plays performed today. All classes are taught by Precipice artistic director Gary Jacobs who has over 35 years of experience teaching, directing, and producing improvisational theater.
